“Measure success in life by effort and doing your best, then it is always in your hands to succeed and be proud of yourself.” ― Prof Steve Peters
Hello comrades, I hope you’ve all been doing well. It’s been a while, and I wanted to bring to you a concept that I’ve been following as of lately. It stems from Dr. Steve Peters' book "The Chimp Paradox". The essence of the book focuses on understanding the workings of the brain, particularly the interaction between the logical/rational part (the Human) and the emotional/instinctive part (the Chimp).
Within, you’ll come across a section called the Stone of Life. Essentially think of this as metaphorical concept that underscores the importance of your own self-worth and values/code of ethics. The Stone of Life represents the idea that each person has a limited and precious resource – their life energy.
The Stone of Life reminds us who we are on a deep level. It reflects our core principles as human beings.
So as a practical example here’s mine - represented in Journal form. I try to stick by these words as much as I can. Included are the Cardinal Virtues of Stoicism, that I’ve carried with me for the last decade.
Give it a try today. Write a list, or, make a mental note of the things that you consider essential for your lifetime. Here think about what traits, characteristics or principles - drive you forward. Can you stick to these when times are good, and even when the going gets tough?
Until next time, be well comrades.
Memento mori,
Enda.
Great idea Enda. Can really see the use keeping such a touchstone in the office, bedside table or car can have during periods of doubt. Must give the book a read!
